The QXD file extension is linked to the QuarkXPress Document Format. QuarkXPress is a desktop publishing software used primarily by printers, publishers, and advertising agencies to design and print publications, catalogs, and other high-quality print products.
QXD is a proprietary format that can only be opened and edited with QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign (using the Markzware plugin). The QXD format includes texts and layout instructions, but not images and fonts. These must be supplied separately to get everything displayed correctly.
If you do not have access to one of the programs, you should ask the creator to export the QXD file as a pdf or eps file. These file formats can be imported into many more (even free) programs and continue to edit.
It should also be noted that Quark's QXD format was changed to version 6.0 and replaced with qxp. However, Qxd files can be read in a newer version of quarkXPress.
Most often resolving problems with opening QXD files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support QXD files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of QXD files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate QXD files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the QuarkXPress applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where QuarkXPress has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening QXD files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
