The file extension ACSM identifies so-called Adobe Content Server message files. The files are used by Adobe Digital Editon and are a kind of key file (key) for download and authorization.
Adobe Digital Edition is a program for managing and reading ebooks and other digital publications. If you buy an e-book or an empty one (for example, from the example page of Adobe Digital Edition), you just download a fairly small ACSM file.
This file can be opened with Adobe Digital Edition, whereupon the corresponding book is downloaded. When purchasing e-books, the ACSM file also checks which rights are available for the respective book (read / copy / print). Acsm files are a kind of DRM (digital rights management)
The books themselves are available in different formats, for example EPub or pdf. With ctrl + I (Windows) or Cmd + I (Mac) you can view the information of the currently open book, including the storage path. However, it should be noted that there are protected, protected pdf files do not display with the Adobe Reader.
Most often resolving problems with opening ACSM files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support ACSM files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of ACSM files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate ACSM files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Digital Editions applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Digital Editions has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening ACSM files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
