The file extension XMP identifies so-called Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform files. It is a labeling technology for images, databases or web documents. Using XMP technology, information about a file, such as description, keywords, author, or copyright information, is embedded within itself. Raw files also save the settings and changes made in an XMP file.
This data can also be saved as an extra file in an XMP file. The XMP format was developed by Adobe as a platform and file type spanning metadata standard. Xmp files can be used by all XMP compatible applications (mainly Adobe applications). Since XMP files are xml files, they can of course also be viewed with any text editor.
Via 'File-> File Information-> extended' some Adobe applications such as Photoshop or Bridge can be entered and loaded, attached or saved via an XMP file. Often the XMP format is also used to organize large amounts of files in a database.
Most often resolving problems with opening XMP files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support XMP files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of XMP files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate XMP files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Bridge applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Bridge has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening XMP files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
