The extension WPD is used by Corel WordPerfect for its own document format. Similar to DOC for Microsoft Word, WPD is a proprietary format and can contain text, images, tables, and vector objects. WordPerfect is only available as part of the WordPerfect Office suite.
A special feature of this format is the downward compatibility. For example, documents saved with one of the newer X versions (eg Corel WordPerfect Office X3) can still be loaded with WordPerfect 6.0. Of course, you have to do without certain new features.
There are older versions of WordPerfect for Apple Macintosh and Linux, but they were discontinued from the year 2000 at the latest. Newer versions are only developed for Windows. The WPD format, like the doc format, can however be read by some free and commercial text editing programs.
WPD files are not to be confused with Microsoft Works files with the extension wps.
Most often resolving problems with opening WPD files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support WPD files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of WPD files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate WPD files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the NeoOffice applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where NeoOffice has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening WPD files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
