The file extension PREL is used for project files from the Premiere Elements video editing software. Prel files are XML-based files and contain, among other things, all settings such as video size, output format, filters, titles as well as references to audio and video files.
Premiere Elements is, so to speak, the little brother of Premiere Pro, which can also process PREL files, but only from version CS4. Since it is only a project file with references, of course, the media files must be present. In addition, the import of PREL files under Premiere Pro only works on Windows systems.
Most often resolving problems with opening PREL files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of PREL files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate PREL files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Premiere Pro applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Premiere Pro has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening PREL files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
