The file extension PPTX is the latest version of the Microsoft Powerpoint file format ppt. The PPTX format will be supported from the 2007 version of the worldwide presentation program. The file extension PPTX simply means Powerpoint Presentation Xml, ie a PowerPoint presentation in XML format.
A PPTX file, like the old ppt files, can contain not only formatted text, lists, pictures, videos but also music and Excel spreadsheets, which are divided into boards or slides. In addition, many elements can be animated or fade in and out, as well as with different effects. PPTX files can not contain macros, files with macros automatically get the extension pptm. The files are editable and will not start automatically.
PPTX is an XML based file format (Office Open XML) that is unreadable with older versions of PowerPoint. For the Office versions 2000, 2003 and XP, however, this functionality can be retrofitted with the help of the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, whereby the result of an imported PPTX file does not always have to be 100% identical to the original.
Office Open XML is an open standard developed by Microsoft for office applications, which is intended to ensure the file exchange between different office suites.
A PPTX file consists of several XML files, which are automatically combined with the ZIP algorithm as an archive when saving. This saves space compared to the old format. Other benefits include better data integrity and easier data recovery in the event of data loss.
Most often resolving problems with opening PPTX files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support PPTX files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of PPTX files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate PPTX files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the PowerPoint applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where PowerPoint has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening PPTX files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
