A PPSM file, like the old pps files, can contain not only formatted text, lists, pictures, videos, but also music and Excel spreadsheets, which are divided into boards or slides. In addition, many elements can be animated or fade in and out, as well as with different effects. The files contain a complete slideshow and are no longer editable. They are started automatically like pps and ppsx files, assuming compatible software.

PPSM is an XML based file format (Office Open XML) that is unreadable with older versions of PowerPoint. For the Office versions 2000, 2003 and XP, however, this functionality can be retrofitted using the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, whereby the result of a scanned PPSM file does not always have to be 100% the same as the original.

Install PowerPoint or other program from the list

Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of PPSM files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.

Set PowerPoint as the default program for opening PPSM files

It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate PPSM files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the PowerPoint applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where PowerPoint has been installed.
