The file extension PPSM is the latest version of the Microsoft PowerPoint file format pps. The PPSM format will be supported as of the 2007 release (Mac 2008) of the worldwide presentation program. The file extension PPSM simply means Powerpoint Presentation Slideshow XML Macro-enabled, so a PowerPoint presentation in Office Open XML format with macros. It corresponds to a ppsx file with macros.
A PPSM file, like the old pps files, can contain not only formatted text, lists, pictures, videos, but also music and Excel spreadsheets, which are divided into boards or slides. In addition, many elements can be animated or fade in and out, as well as with different effects. The files contain a complete slideshow and are no longer editable. They are started automatically like pps and ppsx files, assuming compatible software.
PPSM files can contain macros. These macros may also contain malware, so checking an PPSM is indicated by an antivirus program.
PPSM is an XML based file format (Office Open XML) that is unreadable with older versions of PowerPoint. For the Office versions 2000, 2003 and XP, however, this functionality can be retrofitted using the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, whereby the result of a scanned PPSM file does not always have to be 100% the same as the original.
A PPSM file consists of several XML files, which are automatically summarized as archives when saved using the ZIP algorithm. This saves space compared to the old format. Other benefits include increased data integrity and easier data recovery in the event of data loss.
Most often resolving problems with opening PPSM files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support PPSM files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of PPSM files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate PPSM files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the PowerPoint applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where PowerPoint has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening PPSM files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
