The file extension PK is used by the audio editing software Audition for so-called peak data. These files store information about the display of WAV files, such as visualizing the waveform.
PK files are automatically generated when importing wav files from Audition and speed up any further opening of the same wav file. Pk files can also be easily deleted because they can be recreated when needed. (Of course, this will take longer and this behavior can also be switched off in the options)
The quasi predecessor Cool Edit Pro, which was purchased by Adobe and further developed as an audition, also uses PK files for this purpose.
The current version of Audition CS 5.5 now uses the extension pkf for these files, which now store floating point (floating point) data. These files are not backward compatible.
Most often resolving problems with opening PK files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support PK files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of PK files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate PK files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Audition applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Audition has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening PK files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
