What is PEK file?

The file extension PEK is used for so-called peak waveform files of various media-processing Adobe products. PEK files are automatically generated files that are created when importing or adding an audio file to a project.

When an audio file is imported, the Adobe program creates .cf files (. Matched audio file) .pk files that contain visual waveform data for previewing in the audio track timeline. Thus, faster work with the preview should be guaranteed.

Depending on the file type, the program creates various auxiliary files (pek, mpgindex) in the media cache. It also creates a media cache database that certain Adobe programs can share. This gives the programs access to the media caches of the other programs. (if available)

You can create or clean up cache folders under 'Edit-> Preferences-> Media & Disk Cache' (Windows) or 'Settings-> Media & Disk Cache' (Mac OS). These files are only necessary during a project and can be deleted after completion.

In order to open a file with PEK extension one of the following programs must be installed on user’s system. If a problem with opening PEK file occurred, it is highly possible that none of the listed programs is present on user’s system. Even if one or more said programs are installed, there may be issues related with given programs. In order to solve a problem with PEK files, follow the instructions below.

Install Adobe After Effects or other program from the list

Most often resolving problems with opening PEK files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support PEK files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of PEK files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.

Set Adobe After Effects as the default program for opening PEK files

It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate PEK files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe After Effects applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe After Effects has been installed.
