PDX files are index files of the Acrobat document software. Pdx files include the index of PDF documents and folders that contain documents. With the help of the PDX file, Acrobat can quickly search many pdf files.
PDX files can be created under 'Advanced-> Document Processing-> Full Text Index with Catalog' in Acrobat. In addition to a PDX file, Acrobat also creates a folder of the same name with idx files that contain the actual index entries. It should be noted that when changing the folder structure, the index may need to be recreated.
Index files can also be used by Acrobat Reader, but the associated PDF documents and idx files must exist in the original folder structure.

Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of PDX files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate PDX files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Acrobat applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Acrobat has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening PDX files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
