The file extension MTX is used for 3D scene data in the so-called MetaStream format. It is an open streaming format that displays 3D content on web pages. An MTX file contains a so-called high-level description of a model with attributes and animations, while the textures and model geometry are stored in mts files.
To view the 3D data with a browser, the Viewpoint Media Player Plugin is required. The development has been discontinued for a long time, so that Mozilla Firefox 3.0 is no longer supported. In addition to the Internet Explorer, Safari on Apple Mac OSX can also be used.
In addition to some CAD programs (some only with a plugin), the long-running authoring program Adobe Atmosphere can handle the MetaStream format.
The Metastream 3 (MTS3) format is also referred to as the VET (Viewpoint Experience Technology) format.
Most often resolving problems with opening MTX files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support MTX files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of MTX files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate MTX files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Microsoft Visual Studio applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Microsoft Visual Studio has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening MTX files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
