The file extension MTS denotes a file that contains data according to the AVCHD standard. This can be both video and audio.
The extension is usually used for files that are still on the storage medium of the recording device (eg camcorder). After importing to the computer, the extension m2ts for these files is usually used.
The files contain a transport stream in an MPEG 2 container, which may contain video data with a resolution between 720x480 (SD) and 1920x1080 (FullHD) and audio data as PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) or AC3 (Dolby Digital).
AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) is a standard for file-based recording and playback of high-definition video. Developed by Sony and Panasonic, it is mainly used in camcorders for the consumer market.
Most often resolving problems with opening MTS files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support MTS files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of MTS files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate MTS files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Toast 11 applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Toast 11 has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening MTS files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
