MSG files are generated by Microsoft Outlook when saving an email message as a file. E-mail fields such as date, sender, recipient, subject and of course the message itself are processed. Also attachments may be included. Msg files are used in the same way by the Microsoft Exchange Server.
In addition to Microsoft Outlook, there are a few mail programs that can read and process MSG files. With conversion programs, most MSG files can be converted to eml format, which can be read by a variety of mail programs (eg Thunderbird) Mozilla Thunderbird can import the email from Outlook, even if Outlook is installed.
Most often resolving problems with opening MSG files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support MSG files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of MSG files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate MSG files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file.
