What is IND file?

The IND extension identifies documents from Adobe InDesign, a DTP (desktop publishing) solution, for creating print templates and layouts for print products such as flyers, catalogs, or brochures. The IND files therefore contain text, images, layers, fonts and the layout.

The IND format is proprietary and closed, so very few programs can handle it. Adobe InDesign can also save more compatible formats, such as PDF.

Therefore, it is recommended to make the files available in one of these formats, if possible. Or, if this is not possible, use the demo version of Adobe InDesign to convert the file to another format.

The standard version of InDesign documents is actually indd, the extension IND represents only a 3-digit extension of the same file type to avoid possible problems on older systems or programs. It was probably also used in the first version of InDesign.

It should be noted that the file extension IND of InDesign is not registered, so you have to change the extension in indd, you want to open the file with a double-click.

In order to open a file with IND extension one of the following programs must be installed on user’s system. If a problem with opening IND file occurred, it is highly possible that none of the listed programs is present on user’s system. Even if one or more said programs are installed, there may be issues related with given programs. In order to solve a problem with IND files, follow the instructions below.

Install Adobe InDesign or other program from the list

Most often resolving problems with opening IND files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support IND files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of IND files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.

Set Adobe InDesign as the default program for opening IND files

It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate IND files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe InDesign applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe InDesign has been installed.
