CPT files are image files in the native format of Corel Photo-Paint. Photo-Paint is the image editor of the CorelDraw Graphics Suite and is not available separately. Similar to Adobe Photoshop, Photo-Paint offers many features for professional image editing and is used quite often in prepress.
CPT files are image files that can contain masks, layers, shapes and lenses in addition to the actual image information. Grayscale, CMYK and LAB color space are supported.
The CPT format is proprietary and as of version 7 can only be read or converted by Corel products. In addition, the format is not 100% backwards compatible and even newer versions of Photo-Paint (X-Series) can not read pictures from older versions 6 and below. Note that Corel PaintShop Pro can not handle CPT files.
Most often resolving problems with opening CPT files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support CPT files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of CPT files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate CPT files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the XnView applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where XnView has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening CPT files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
