An ARJ file is an archive file in which one or more files can be archived and compressed. The ARJ format was especially popular at the time of MS-DOS, but has since been completely replaced by rar and zip. Arj supports long filenames, file versioning, data integrity protection, and distributing an archive across multiple files. (these then have the ending a00, a01, a02, etc.)
In addition to ARJSoft's ARJ and ARJ32 commercial variants, OpenSource-Arj also includes a free version of the Pack program, which also supports Linux. These are only command line programs.
However, there are a number of free and commercial pack programs that can handle ARJ archives. These usually have a graphical user interface, but can only unpack ARJ archives.
Most often resolving problems with opening ARJ files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support ARJ files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of ARJ files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate ARJ files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the iArchiver applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where iArchiver has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening ARJ files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
