An AI file is a file of the vector based drawing program Adobe Illustrator. The AI format is a proprietary format containing one-sided vector drawings stored in either EPS or PDF format.
In addition to Adobe Illustrator, there are also a number of commercial and freeware drawing programs that can import or import AI files. However, since Adobe further develops the AI format, it can happen that with foreign software AI files that were created with a newer Illustrator version (CS3, CS4, CS5) can not easily import.
Remedy here either only the most recent version or the file in the Illustrator as a compatible version to save (just save when saving an older Illustratorversion)
Most often resolving problems with opening AI files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support AI files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of AI files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate AI files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Illustrator applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Illustrator has been installed.
