The ACCDB file extension identifies database files of the Microsoft Access database application. These files include data organized in tables and fields, forms, SQL queries, and other data. Access is a proprietary database management system for managing data in databases and developing database applications.
The ACCDB format was introduced by Microsoft with the 2007 version, replacing the old mdb format. The new format offers an extended range of functions. These include database encryption, multi-value fields, the ability to save file attachments and other binary data, and integration with MS Outlook and MS SharePoint.
In addition to Access and a few other database applications, the Microsoft Visual Studio programming environment can handle ACCDB files. In order to read OpenOffice ACCDB files, select 'Connect to an existing database' in the start dialog and set 'Microsoft Access 2007' in the drop-down box underneath. After clicking on 'next' one comes to the file selection, in which one can select also ACCDB files. How reliable the import is and whether this functionality also exists under Linux and Windows, could not be tested so far.
FileMaker Pro requires the FmPro Migrator.
Most often resolving problems with opening ACCDB files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support ACCDB files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of ACCDB files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate ACCDB files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the MDB Viewer applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where MDB Viewer has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening ACCDB files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
