The file extension 8BF marks plugins for the image processing software Adobe Photoshop. With these plugins, additional functionalities, such as new effects or the support of other graphics formats in Photoshop can be retrofitted. Adobe Photoshop uses various 8b extensions for different plugin types. 8BF files are filter plugins.
8BF files come in the plugin folder (plugins) located inside the main Photoshop folder. It should be noted that not all plugins are compatible with all versions of Photoshop and when using the 64-bit version usually also a customized version of the plug-in is necessary.
In addition, one must select the plugins for its platform, since those for Windows Photoshop do not work with the Mac version of Photoshop. However, the plugins for the Mac version usually have no extension or the official extension 8bfm.
The file extension 8BF refers to filter plugins, which may include, among other things, new effects, alienations or color filters. In addition to many free filter plugins, there are also commercial ones, such as the Kais Power Tools.
To see if a plugin is installed correctly, you can display a list of all installed plugins in the submenu Plugins (Windows: Help, Mac OSX: Photoshop). In addition to Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements, several other Adobe products have a plug-in interface for 8BF files. There are also some third-party products that have an 8BF interface, but these are partially limited. GIMP also requires the PSPI plugin.
Most often resolving problems with opening 8BF files is very simple. Just install an appropriate program that supports such files. All of the listed programs support 8BF files, but may vary in offered function and purpose. Some programs may be capable only of viewing contents of 8BF files or offer file conversion options, but may not be capable of editing such files.
It is possible that although a compatible program has been installed on user’s system, it is not used by the system to open it. This may happen because no default application was associated with this type of files. To associate 8BF files with given application, select "Open with" from drop-down menu (accessed by right-clicking on the file). Then select from the list the program or application you want to be used to open this type of file. If the Adobe Photoshop applications is not on the list, select "Browse" option in order to manually locate the directory where Adobe Photoshop has been installed.
Sometimes problems with opening 8BF files may not lie with the application itself, but can arise due to other causes, such as:
